This paper explicates two methods used in a study conducted to propose a Malaysian folktale classification system.Fundamentally, three substantial folktale classification systems exist and individually, each system classifies based on three distinctive folktale units: type, motif, and function. Independently, type and motif classify based on the content of folktale while function, the structure of folktale. The study aims to generate the Malaysian folktale classification system based on an amalgamation of the three renowned units of folktale. To classify, the method selected is structural-semantic analysis which encompassed three levels of classification. It classifies sequentially according to the content and structure of the Malaysian folktale. Nonetheless, prior to classify, an identification of the Malaysian folktales must take place Such task is steered by two qualifying factors: formal features in an operational definition developed in the study and also an ownership of the folktales. These factors function as a filter towards safeguarding the study from contamination of forms of folklore other than the study intends to examine.Additionally, they assist in discriminating between modern folktales and the ones with embedded cultural values of different generations. In a nutshell, this paper reveals the methods to identify and classify the Malaysian folktales

A Conceptual Model of Folktale Classification as a Visual Guide to a Malaysian Folktale Classification System Development

    Get PDF
In a study to systematically preserve the Malaysian folktales as one of Malaysia’s intangible cultural heritage, a Malaysian Folktale Classification System (MFCS) is proposed to be developed as encouraged by UNESCO.Such a classification system is currently absent in Malaysia. In order to develop a comprehensive classification system, three folktale units are integrated and utilized: function, motif, and type. The use of the three folktale units ensures that the MFCS covers two important facets of folktale: structure and content. The integration of the classification system warrants a complicated classification process. Therefore, a conceptual model, which is central to this article, is constructed as a visual guide to assist the classification process. It illustrates a flow of analysis and all components required to classify namely the three folktale units and their guiding factors, and a primary classification method. A pictorial representation method is utilized to construct the conceptual model. With the conceptual model constructed, it is expected that the analysis of the Malaysian folktales toward the development of the MFCS becomes apparent and guided

The study aimed to identify the HWP1 gene in non-Candida albicans Candida species and the differential expression of HWP1 following treatment with Piper betle and Brucea javanica aqueous extracts. All candidal suspensions were standardized to 1 x 10(6) cells/mL. The suspension was incubated overnight at 37 degrees C (C. parapsilosis, 35 degrees C). Candidal cells were treated with each respective extract at 1, 3, and 6 mg/mL for 24 h. The total RNA was extracted and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was carried out with a specific primer of HWP1. HWP1 mRNAs were only detected in C. albicans, C. parapsilosis, and C. tropicalis. Exposing the cells to the aqueous extracts has affected the expression of HWP1 transcripts. C. albicans, C. parapsilosis, and C. tropicalis have demonstrated different intensity of mRNA. Compared to P. betle, B. javanica demonstrated a higher suppression on the transcript levels of HWP1 in all samples. HWP1 was not detected in C. albicans following the treatment of B. javanica at 1 mg/mL. In contrast, C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis were shown to have HWP1 regulation. However, the expression levels were reduced upon the addition of higher concentration of B. javanica extract. P. betle and B. javanica have potential to be developed as oral health product.Article Link : http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ecam/2013/397268

Structural semantic folktale model as a visualization means of structural and semantic relationships between Malaysian folktales' classes

    Get PDF
A study is conducted to preserve Malaysian folktales through a development of a Malaysian Folktale Classification System (MFCS) which is currently absent in Malaysia. The systematic classification system is developed by integrating three essential folktale unit: function, motif, and type.Such integration is necessary to ensure the classification system covers two significant aspects of a folktale which are structure/form and content/semantic.As a result of the integration, structural and semantic relationships are born, but they are embedded in the classification system. In order to visualize the duo-facet relationships, a network model coined as a Structural Semantic Folktale Model (SSFM) is constructed. The network model is a vital support and extension of the classification system because it permits deeper study to be conducted on the root of the Malaysian folktales collected. As an effort to visualize the model systematically, a computer assisted qualitative data analysis (CAQDAS) Atlas.ti is utilized.Being the emphasis of this article, it is hoped that the network model would provide a platform for understanding the core of one of Malaysia’s intangible cultural heritages and beckons deeper study on such connections

Malaysian folktales are one of the intangible cultural heritages that reflect and carry the lineage of the past generations to the present. It deserves to be preserved systematically but thus far; it is found such effort is scarce if not lacking in this country. Therefore, a study is conducted to preserve such valuable heritage through structural classification of the folktales. To achieve such classification, embedded narrative structures of the folktales are sought and utilized.Additionally, as a method to guide the analysis to excavate the narrative structures, 31 functions of folktale’s morphology are adapted. Even so, before the functions are acquired, the folktale’s dramatis personae and its spheres of action based on the morphology of folktale are utilized as methods to support in the identification of the functions.Atlas.ti, a computer-aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) is used to support the analysis of the folktales to obtain the dramatis personae and the functions because it increases the validity of the analysis conducted. To that end, this article presents the distribution of the dramatis personae identified to assist the classification process of the folktales and also the finding of the analysis implemented on the collected folktales which are the sequences of function that eventually form the structural classification.Academic paper: An Identification of Dramatis Personae Distribution in Malaysian Folktales for Structural Classification

Shariah compliant hotel is an essential product in Islamic tourism where many activities could be available there. Thus, certification plays a significant role as a symbol of commitment for the hotel operators to comply with the Shariah principles. By using qualitative methodology, this study aims to explore the Malaysian certification bodies that offer Islamic related certificates to the hotel. There is no standardisation on the certification requirements and approach among the certification bodies to certify the Shariah compliant hotel. Thus, the government should introduce a mechanism to monitor certification to the Shariah compliant hotel.
